Abstract

Shock is a clinical diagnosis due to circulatory inadequacy caused by several different mechanisms.   The commonest causes in children are sepsis and hypovolaemia from any cause.

Shock manifests differently in children compared with adults.  The aim of treatment is to quickly restore circulating volume, for which crystalloids or colloids may be used.  Continual reassessment is the key to successful resuscitation.  Delays in diagnosis or treatment can be fatal.
